Governor says locals will be exempted from paying toll tax on Kashmir highway

Srinagar: The governor of  Jammu and Kashmir Satya Pal Malik on Thursday assured that locals would be exempted from paying the tax.

While inaugarating the grid lock seperator in Srinagar the governor said that there won’t be any toll tax on the locals, ” We have taken up the issue with the central government but due to the ongoing election process things have slowed up a bit,” he said.

The move comes after the traders, commuters and other business communities have refused to pay the tax.

The move received flak with group of traders and transporters  submitting a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner Anantnag demanding the rollback of the toll tax being levied on the vehicles.

Mainstream parties like National Conference and the PDP also demanded the rollback of the tax.  With NC calling  the move as  ‘unfair and unjust . PDP meanwhile said such a measure would hit the already economically downtrodden people hard.
