Srinagar, Dec 24 : The independent Corporators with the support of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday submitted No Confidence Motion against the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Mayor, Junaid Azim Mattoo.

According to the wire service— this comes a day after 47 Corporators including 23 from Peoples Conference (PC), 17 from Congress and some independents jointly submitted No confidence Motion against SMC Deputy Mayor, Sheikh Imran.

Sources said that independent Corporators here have submitted no confidence motion against Mayor, adding that a total of 40 Corporators including 29 independents and 11 from BJP today moved no confidence motion before the Secretary Council.

They said that as per the rules, no decision regarding the removal of Mayor can be taken till next 48 hours following the submission of No Confidence Motion.

Sources told news agency that the no confidence motion was moved by independent Corporators and was supported by the BJP Corporators. They informed that the next Mayor would likely from BJP.

An official privy to the development divulged that the corporators moved no confidence motion today wherein support of 40 corporators was mentioned.

Pertinently, the process for submitting no confidence motion was going on from December 10. The corporators held series of meetings since December 10 while a case was also filed against the Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran for allegedly threatening one of the Corporator for such a process.

Imran is under detention since August 5, when the central government was abrogated the special status of Jammu and Kashmir (Article 370) and bifurcated the erstwhile State into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Nonetheless, Mayor Mattoo was also put under detention on August 5 but was later released due to his health conditions following which he was allowed to visit outside hospital for treatment.

As per KNO, Mayor Junaid Azim Mattoo while talking to reporters said that he is ready for floor testing any time. “We have support of 50 Corporators. I am ready for floor testing anytime,” Matoo said.

He said that at least fraud signature has been made of at least 12 Corporators. “The no confidence motion submitted today is actually lacking the number of corporators. We will prove the support of 50 corporators anytime,” Mattoo added. (KNO)
