Two militants, including arrested LeT commander, killed in Srinagar: Police

Srinagar, June 29

Two militants, including a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander who was arrested earlier on Monday, were killed and three CRPF jawans were injured in the overnight encounter at Srinagar’s Maloora on Tuesday.

“Both the terrorists were killed in the encounter. In the initial firefight three CRPF personnel got injured and [LeT commander] Abrar, accompanying the search party, got hit,” Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said.

Officials said the condition of the injured personnel was stable.

“In the ensuing gunfire, a foreign terrorist, who fired from inside the house got neutralised, and Abrar also got killed. Two AK-47 rifles were recovered from the site,” IGP Kumar said.

Abrar, the police said, was involved in several killings of security forces and civilians along with other terrorists.

Abrar was arrested on Monday at a checkpoint of the police and the CRPF at Parimpora area on the outskirts of Srinagar.

“On Parimpora ‘naka’, a vehicle was stopped and their identity was asked. Abrar sitting at the back seat tried to open his bag and took out a grenade. The ‘naka’ party swiftly swung into action and grabbed the person sitting at the back seat. Both the driver and the person sitting at the back seat were taken into police station,” the police said.

On sustained interrogation, the police said, Abrar disclosed that he had kept his AK-47 rifle in a house located at Maloora.

“Thereafter he was taken to that house to recover the weapon. When the party was entering the house to recover the weapon, one of his associate, a foreign terrorist about whom he didn’t disclose anything, was hiding inside the house and fired on the party, triggering the encounter,” the police said.
