Kupwara District Administration Relocates 336 Families Amidst Devastating Floods; Infrastructure Damaged, Relief Operations Underway

Kupwara, April 29: The District Administration of Kupwara swiftly relocated 336 families from flood-affected areas to safer locations on Monday, with Handwara tehsil alone accounting for 198 evacuated families. In addition, floods have inundated five villages in Handwara and partially affected 51 villages across the district.

The devastating floods have wreaked havoc on major infrastructure, causing damages to critical assets such as the Shumriyal Bridge, Khumryal Bridge, and several other bridges. Additionally, key buildings, including RDD structures and the AD Handicrafts office, suffered damage.

Closure of border roads due to snowfall and avalanche threats has added to the challenges faced by the administration. However, the District Administration assures the public of its relentless efforts in rescue, relief, and restoration operations, with continuous monitoring of water levels and evacuation measures underway in flood-prone areas.

To accommodate displaced families, 21 shelter homes have been established across the district, and residents are urged to seek assistance from designated control rooms. As a precautionary measure, school activities remained suspended for the day.

DC Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan, has directed immediate restoration measures to reconnect isolated villages and personally inspected the affected areas. In a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority, she reiterated the importance of concerted efforts in rescue and relief operations, urging residents to avoid water bodies and cooperate with the administration.
