Srinagar, Nov 22 (KINS): With the rising number of road accidents, traffic authorities have appealed to the public to support their efforts in making Srinagar safer and reducing fatalities.
Official data reveals that over 5,000 lives have been lost to road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir over the past six years, with an average of 800–900 deaths annually.
In response to the recent tragic death of two students in a road accident in Srinagar’s Tengpora area, the traffic police have launched a drive targeting violators, particularly minors operating two-wheelers and cars.
SSP Traffic Srinagar, Muzaffar Shah, has urged the public to cooperate in addressing road accidents.
“We must make this city safe from accidents and fatalities, and this can only happen with your full support. I have observed encouraging public cooperation over the past week. I urge everyone to continue supporting us by refraining from giving vehicles to minors.
Furthermore, adherence to traffic rules and regulations will ensure easier and safer commuting for all,” he told the news agency KINS.
Officials have identified “over-speeding” as the leading cause of accidents. Moreover, the absence of trauma centers along highways has worsened the fatality rate, which remains higher than the national average due to delays in emergency care.
“The responsibility of reducing accidents lies with the entire community, not just the Traffic Department,” an official stated. Recommendations from a legislative House Committee, urging coordinated action by departments such as Transport, Traffic, and R&B, remain largely unimplemented, highlighting systemic challenges.
“Road safety requires a comprehensive approach beyond enforcement,” the official added. “Public awareness campaigns, improved infrastructure, and strict adherence to traffic laws are essential to reducing fatalities and safeguarding lives.” (KINS)
