Srinagar Dec 04 (KINS): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has raised concerns over the proposed Bijbehara-Awantipora-Pulwama railway line, emphasizing its potential adverse impact on local livelihoods and the environment.
Speaking to reporters according to news agency KINS, Iltija stated, “Development should not be done at the cost of livelihood. The proposed railway line will cut through existing orchards, which are a primary source of sustainable income for many people in the area. While we are not against development, it must not come at the expense of ecology, the environment, and livelihoods.”
The proposed railway project, which is part of the broader effort to expand Jammu and Kashmir’s rail connectivity, is expected to pass through fertile agricultural and orchard lands in South Kashmir. Local residents and environmentalists have echoed similar concerns, warning that the project could lead to significant economic and ecological disruption.
Iltija Mufti urged the government to explore alternative routes or solutions to minimize the adverse impact on orchards and agricultural land. She highlighted the importance of striking a balance between development and sustainability, stating that preserving the region’s ecological integrity is vital for its long-term prosperity.
The railway line is anticipated to boost connectivity in South Kashmir, but the controversy over its route underscores the ongoing debate between infrastructure development and environmental preservation in the region.
Further consultations with stakeholders are expected as the project advances. (KINS)
