Srinagar, Dec 28 (KINS): A significant increase in heart attack cases during colder months has raised concerns among health experts.
Dr. Khalid Mohiuddin, Head of the Cardiology Department at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, according to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS), says that cold weather and viral infections increase risk factors for cardiovascular events.
Citing data from the Journal of American College of Cardiology and the SWIR Heart Study, Dr. Mohiuddin explained that prolonged exposure to cold temperatures not only heightens the risk of heart attacks but also exacerbates other cardiovascular issues, especially among elderly and vulnerable populations.
“Last year alone, around 5 lakh people lost their lives due to extreme cold, and millions were left disabled due to heart attacks,” Dr. Mohiuddin stated.
He also pointed out that respiratory tract infections, including those caused by seasonal flu and viruses, have a compounding effect on cardiovascular health.
The COVID-19 pandemic further revealed the connection between viral infections and increased heart attack and stroke rates.
To mitigate these risks, Dr. advises maintaining warm surroundings, avoiding prolonged exposure to cold, and ensuring timely vaccination against seasonal flu for high-risk individuals. “Preventive measures, especially for the elderly and heart patients, are crucial during October and November when such cases surge,” he added.
