Former Gurez MLA Faqeer Mohammad Khan ‘commits suicide’ in Srinagar
Srinagar, March 20 (KINS): Former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Gurez and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Faqeer Mohammad Khan allegedly died by suicide at his government-allocated residence in Srinagar’s high-security Tulsibagh area on Thursday.
According to official sources, Khan was found in a pool of blood after allegedly shooting himself with the service rifle of one of his personal security officers (PSOs) at Quarter Number 9A. He was rushed to SMHS Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
A veteran politician, Khan was a resident of Gurez in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district. He had won the 1996 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections as an independent candidate and served as an MLA in the erstwhile state legislature.
In the recently held 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, he contested from the Gurez (ST) constituency on a BJP ticket but was defeated by National Conference candidate Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi by a margin of 1,049 votes.
Authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death. (KINS)
