Kashmiri MBBS student dies in Iran

Srinagar Aug 15 (KINS): A young Kashmiri female MBBS student died in Iran.

Student union leader Nasir Kheunami also posted on social media. “Heartbreaking news that, Young Kashmiri MBBS student Sabha Rasool, from Safakadal, Srinagar, studying at Urmia University of Medical Sciences in Iran, tragically passed away today. She had recently resumed her studies after being repatriated during the recent Iran–Israel conflict and was the first Kashmiri student to be evacuated from war-torn Iran in June. During the recent Iran–Israel war, she had called me multiple times. She was kind, full of talent, and spoke rigoursuly about the evacuation of Kashmiri students from Iran.

Her friends and batchmates allege that her death may have been the result of gross medical negligence, citing delays in ambulance arrival, prolonged waiting for admission despite her critical condition, lack of regular monitoring, and an apparent absence of timely treatment. They recount a gut-wrenching sequence of events; hours of waiting for care, being shifted from a ward to a corridor, vital signs left unchecked for an entire day, and eventually seizures and unstable vitals before she was moved to the ICU. While medical reports were initially shared when her condition was stable, her peers say that once she deteriorated, no further records were provided. Doctors later cited acute liver failure with pulmonary complications, but her friends maintain that an exact diagnosis was never confirmed.

Her bereaved parents now face the unimaginable pain of not being able to see their daughter one last time. Their only plea is to bring her mortal remains back to Kashmir so she can be laid to rest in her homeland, in accordance with cultural and religious traditions. We have written to the Hon’ble External Affairs Minister DrS Jaishankar, urging him to intervene urgently, liaise with Iranian authorities, and ensure that all humanitarian and administrative procedures are completed at the earliest, so that Sabha Rasool’s family can receive her mortal remains without unnecessary delay and accord her the dignified farewell she deserves. Time is of the essence, every passing hour deepens the anguish of a family waiting in despair. We have also urged the Iranian authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of her death and to take strict action against the concerned hospital if negligence is established,” he posted on Facebook.
