Govt to stop sale of ‘harmful fertilizers, pesticides, and artificial coloring on fruits in J&K’

Arshad Farooq

Srinagar, Oct 18 (KINS): Jammu and Kashmir Horticulture Minister Javed Ahmad Dar Saturday assured strict measures to curb the sale of substandard fertilizers and pesticides in the Union Territory.

Speaking to reporters in Baramulla as per news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) Dar said several such products are being sold illegally and stressed that the government is finalizing plans to strengthen the enforcement wing, which had been delayed earlier due to manpower shortages.

The Minister also addressed concerns regarding the use of artificial coloring on fruits. “During our visit to Kolkata, complaints were received about fruits with harmful coloring. Such fruits have a shorter shelf life and pose serious health risks. I have instructed the department not to allow these colored fruits in the markets,” he said.

Javed Dar added that while licenses cannot be arbitrarily closed, the government remains committed to preventing illegal trade. “We are a progressive state, and licenses can be obtained legally. However, some individuals infiltrate illegal trade through legal channels. In Lakhanpur, we will establish a system to monitor fertilizers and pesticides and control such practices,” he explained.

On another issue raised by an MLA Sopore regarding traffic congestion in the Fruit Mandi, the Minister said, “We are taking steps to ensure a smoother experience for buyers and sellers alike.”(KINS)
