J&K reports 2,872 domestic violence cases in two Years: Govt

KINS Correspondent

Srinagar, Oct 30 (KINS): The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Thursday informed the Legislative Assembly that a total of 2,872 cases of domestic violence were registered in the Union Territory during the last two financial years.

Responding to un-starred question No. 719 tabled by MLA Shamim Firdous, Minister in-charge Social Welfare Department as per news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) stated that domestic violence cases are being addressed through One Stop Centres for Women (Sakhi Centres), which operate under the Directorate of Mission Shakti. These centres, functional across J&K since 2018, provide a range of support services to women in distress — including medical aid, psycho-social counselling, legal assistance, temporary shelter, and police support.

According to the official reply, 893 cases were registered in FY 2023–24, while the number rose sharply to 1,979 in FY 2024–25, as per data available on the official dashboard of the One Stop Centres.

The department added that these centres are integrated with the toll-free helpline number 181 and the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-122) to ensure seamless coordination and rapid assistance for survivors of violence.

“The One Stop Centres are mandated to ensure the safety and security of women affected by domestic violence, cyber harassment, eve-teasing, sexual harassment, rape, and other crimes,” the reply read.(KINS)
