PM Modi Highlights India’s priorities reflected in G20 leaders’ declaration at Johannesburg Summit

Srinagar, Nov 22 (KINS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Johannesburg that India’s priorities were strongly reflected in the G20 Leaders’ Declaration, noting that the key outcomes of India’s G20 Presidency found clear resonance in the South African Summit. The statement outlined the following major points:
1. India ensured the inclusion of key outcomes of its G20 Presidency in the South African Summit’s Leaders’ Declaration and successfully highlighted the issues and priorities of the Global South.
2. Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations has been condemned. [para 6]
3. On technology, the declaration highlights the transformative potential of Digital Public Infrastructure. It reiterates the New Delhi commitments to harness digital and emerging technologies, including AI, and reaffirms the importance of safe, secure, and trustworthy artificial intelligence. [para 45]
4. A strong push was made for language on the empowerment of women and girls. In this regard, one of India’s key G20 outcomes—women-led development—has been encouraged. [para 101]
5. Strengthening disaster resilience and response remains a key priority of the South African Presidency. The declaration reinforces the outcomes of the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group initiated under India’s Presidency and recognises the role of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI). [para 9]
6. The Deccan High-level Principles on Food Security and Nutrition have been reinforced in the context of global food security. [para 39]
7. In the health sector, the role of traditional and complementary medicine has been acknowledged, echoing the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration. [para 104]
8. A major achievement was secured in climate finance, with the declaration adopting more ambitious language than last year. It recognises the need to scale up climate finance from billions to trillions of dollars and notes that developing countries require USD 5.8–5.9 trillion to meet their NDCs for the pre-2030 period. [para 94 & 95] The importance of sustainable consumption and production patterns and the mainstreaming of LiFE – Lifestyles for Sustainable Development was also recognised. [para 26]
9. India pushed for a call to reform the UN Security Council to ensure improved representation. [para 83]
10. Language from the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration was echoed across several sections of the document, reflecting continuity of priorities.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the outcomes demonstrate India’s continued commitment to championing the voice of the Global South and advancing inclusive, sustainable global development.(KINS)
