Srinagar, Feb 14 (KINS): The Drug and Food Control Organization (Food Safety) has ramped up its inspections across Srinagar city, with a special focus on street vendors and eateries. The department in a statement issued to news agency KINS said, “Today, a team led by Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety, Yameen ul Nabi, along with the district’s Food Safety Officer, conducted follow-up inspections in the Hazratbal and Maqdoom Sb areas to assess the sanitary and hygiene standards of food business operators”.
“As part of a special drive aimed at improving food safety practices, the team inspected several establishments dealing with prepared foods, focusing on the use of hygienic practices. During the inspection, it was discovered that some food business operators were using artificial colorants in the preparation of traditional Kashmiri snacks. The team swiftly destroyed the offending products on-site, and stern action under the relevant food safety regulations will be taken against the defaulters”.
“In addition to enforcing food safety regulations, the team also conducted an awareness session for food business operators (FBOs) in the Hazratbal and Maqdoom Sb areas, educating them on proper food handling, storage practices, and the importance of avoiding the use of artificial colors. FBOs were reminded that only natural colors should be used in food preparation, emphasizing that consumer health and safety are paramount”.
“The primary focus of today’s inspections was on food stalls selling ready-to-eat food, as well as roadside eateries. Vendors were educated on maintaining sanitary conditions, adhering to hygiene standards, and avoiding setting up temporary stalls near drains. Furthermore, food business operators were advised to implement pest control measures to ensure the safety and quality of the food they serve”.
Yameen ul Nabi, Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety, stressed that the Drug and Food Control Organization remains committed to protecting public health and fostering a culture of food safety awareness among food business operators.
He reiterated that this inspection drive is part of a larger initiative to ensure food safety and quality throughout Srinagar.
The inspection drive is ongoing, and further inspections will be conducted across various locations in Srinagar.
“Food business operators found violating the Food Safety and Standards Act will face stringent penalties, which could include the closure of their establishments, ” the statement reads.(KINS)
