Sat Paul Sharma takes oath as newly elected Rajya Sabha Member from J&K

Srinagar, Nov 06 (KINS): Sat Paul Sharma, newly elected Member of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir, took oath of office on Thursday.

The oath as per news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) was administered by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan in a brief ceremony held at Parliament House.

A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and president of the party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit, Sharma is a chartered accountant by profession.

He previously served as a cabinet minister in the J&K government and represented the Jammu West constituency in the Legislative Assembly, where he secured victory in 2014 by a record margin of 51,000 votes — the highest at that time.

BJP National President J.P. Nadda, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, and BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir in-charge Tarun Chugh were present at the swearing-in ceremony. Members of Sharma’s family also attended the event.

Sharma was elected to one of the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, marking the UT’s return to representation in the Upper House after a gap of more than four years.

The Rajya Sabha seats from J&K had remained vacant since February 15, 2021, when the terms of former members Ghulam Nabi Azad and Nazir Ahmed Laway ended. The remaining two seats, held by Fayaz Ahmed Mir and Shamsher Singh Manhas, had fallen vacant earlier that same month.(KINS)
