Srinagar, Nov 20 (KINS): Srinagar Police have cracked a major cheating and stolen-gold racket operating across the Kashmir Valley with the arrest of a notorious woman fraudster and her two associates.
Police Station Lal Bazar apprehended Asmat Jan alias Taboo, a woman wanted in multiple fraud and cheating cases registered at Lal Bazar, Safakadal, Chadoora, Sopore, and Khrew (Awantipora). She had been evading arrest for a long time by frequently moving between West Bengal, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Jammu.
Based on specific intelligence, five dedicated teams of PS Lal Bazar—supervised by the SDPO and Zonal SP—tracked and arrested her from Hotel White House in Jalandhar, Punjab.
Her repeated involvement had earlier drawn strong concern from the Gold Association of Kashmir Valley. An FIR (No. 42/2025) has been registered at PS Lal Bazar under Sections 303(2) and 318(4) of the BNS.Further investigation led to the arrest of two associates:
Shameem Ahmad Sheikh, son of Sonaullah Sheikh, resident of Indra Nagar — a goldsmith accused of knowingly purchasing stolen gold at undervalued rates and helping conceal and circulate it.
Basir Ahmad Dar, son of Abdul Aziz Dar, resident of Nawakadal — accused of transporting and disposing of stolen gold supplied by the main accused.
All three accused are in custody. Police said more arrests and recoveries are expected as the investigation continues.(KINS)
