GDC Zanskar students visit KASH Herbarium, KU Botanical Garden

Srinagar Sep 25 (KINS): As part of their educational tour, 35 students accompanied by five faculty members from Government Degree College Zanskar, Ladakh, visited the KASH Herbarium and Kashmir University Botanical Garden (KUBG) at the Department of Botany, University of Kashmir.
During the visit, demonstration sessions were conducted by Akhtar H. Malik, focusing on the rich biodiversity of the region and the significance of herbarium collections in the documentation, identification, conservation and scientific study of plant diversity.
The students were introduced to various aspects of plant identification, preservation and herbarium techniques.
The role and importance of botanical gardens in the conservation of plant diversity, ex-situ conservation, education, research and public awareness were also discussed. Special emphasis was placed on the medicinal plants of Kashmir, their traditional uses and importance in healthcare, as well as the need for their sustainable utilisation and conservation.
The visit provided the students with valuable practical exposure and enhanced their understanding of biodiversity, botanical research, herbarium science, plant conservation, botanical gardens and medicinal plants.
The educational tour proved to be an informative and enriching experience for both the students and faculty members. (KINS)
