“Don’t want to put my family at risk” : Congress Sarpanch from Sopore resigns

Srinagar: Following the killing of a Bharatiya Janta Party Sarpanch in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Thursday, a Congress sarpanch in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla resigned from the post on Friday afternoon.

A local news gathering agency Kashmir News Observer quoting an unnamed official reported that a Sarpanch namely Mohammad Ramzan Lone son Ghulam Qadir Lone of Malmapanpora Dangerpora Tehsil of Sopore resigned from the post.

Mohammad Ramzan said that from the last several years he was living under threat and now he cannot bear it anymore. “I can’t live with the fear of losing my life.” 

He said that he was affiliated with the Indian National Congress from the last several years when he contested panchayat elections he won with a huge majority.

He said that he is around 60 years of age and belongs to a very poor family. “I have four daughters and I don’t want to put my family in risk.”

Ramzan further said that he has nothing to do with the Congress party and he is resigning from the post of Sarpanch as he wants to live his life peacefully—(KNO)
