Srinagar, Aug 15 (KINS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 74th Independence Day asserted that the delimitation process is underway in Jammu and Kashmir, and that Assembly elections will be held soon in the Valley.

According to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS), Prime Minister Narendra Modi while delivering his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort in the national capital New Delhi, disclosed that the “delimitation work is on and once it is completed, the elections to the Assembly will be held and then the Union territory will have its own MLAs and ministers.”

He hailed the completion of one year of the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir as an important milestone.
He counted all benefits that have flowed to J&K, where refugees have got their rightful place as citizens and ended gender discrimination.

“This one year is a year of the new journey of development for Jammu and Kashmir. This one year is the year of the rights received by the women and the Dalits in Jammu and Kashmir. This one year is also the year of a life of dignity for the refugees in Jammu and Kashmir,” added the Prime Minister.
The J-K’s Assembly that was kept under suspended animation after the Mehbooba Mufti government resigned in June 2018, following the withdrawal of the support by her ally BJP.

However interestingly there was no word from the Prime Minister about statehood status to be restored simultaneously. The Assembly was dissolved by the then governor Satya Pal Malik of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Pertinent to mention here that It is now two years that J&K is without a political government.
The PDP-BJP coalition government was the last political government of the state of Jammu and Kashmir – now split into two Union Territories.(KINS)
