Srinagar, June 9 : A two week long Equine Training Programme for interns of B.V.Sc and A.H, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, SKUAST-Kashmir was inaugurated today.
“54 Advanced Field Veterinary Hospital, under the aegis of Chinar Corps, conducts this training program on Treatment, Breeding, Care and Management of Equines (Horses and Mules) for interns every year. The inauguration was attended by Dr. G.N Sheikh, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and other faculty members from the veterinary college, Col Ravi Girdhar and other Army officers from the station,” a defence ministry spokesman said in a statement.
The idea of the internship training program was conceived in the year 2005 when it started off as a week-long program, today, it has been scaled up as an intensive 14-day schedule. This highly popular course provides first-hand exposure and experience to fresh veterinary graduates of the valley on various aspects of equines. Till now more than 700 students in 14 batches have been imparted this training, the spokesman said.
“This intensive training program covers important topics of equine management, breeding, disease, diagnosis, surgical conditions, treatment and equine sports. The interns who attend the training program also get ‘hands on’ training on a variety of clinical procedures in equines,” the spokesman said.
In the inaugural ceremony, Commandant of the hospital welcomed all the dignitaries and interns and told that this training programme is a ‘one of its kind’ program conducted by Army that engages university level students in professional collaboration, the spokesman said.
“Dr. G N Sheikh, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, SKUAST- Kashmir, in his address urged the interns to utilize this rare opportunity through active participation and keenness so as to learn new techniques and finer nuances of equine practice. Dr. Sheikh expressed happiness that Army and specially RVC has been positive in supporting capacity building and professional upgradation of youth in the Valley,” the spokesman said.
He said, “It would be a great opportunity for students to learn from the expertise of the Remount Veterinary Corps.
Col Ravi Girdhar, in his keynote address expressed that such collaboration is a great endeavor in imparting education on equines to the budding veterinarians. Col Girdhar mentioned, “Education is an important tool for nation building and RVC being the premiere organization on equine care and management in the country, the students must involve themselves and learn as much as they can”.
A exhaustively complied training manual on the subject specially prepared for all the students who are attending the two-week long training program was also released on the occasion, the spokesman added.
