SRINAGAR, June 22(KINS): Police has registered a case against a Sopore girl for allegedly threatening to commit suicide and his father has also been booked for “concealing” her whereabouts.

Family of the girl had complained that Nighat Bashir was missing from home and they feared she might have committed suicide.

Nighat Bashir of Seelu Sopore on Sunday evening while taking to micro blogging site twitter said that she will commit suicide by jumping into river Jehlum in protest against alleged harassment by army and the police.

Taking cognizance of the social media post, senior officers of police district Sopore rushed to the house of the girl along with some respectable citizens of the area.

A police official told Kashmir Indepth News Service(KINS) said that they encountered stiff resistance from the family members of the girl.

“The family concealed the whereabouts of the girl. Our team traced the girl who was hiding in the backyard of the house,” the police official said.

“A case has been registered with FIR No 153/2020 under 309 IPC against her for attempting to commit suicide. Another FIR No 154/2020 has been registered against her father and family members for concealing her whereabouts and obstructing police,” the official said.

The police official said that Sopore police is investigating the matter and efforts are on to retrieve every possible detail surrounding the girl’s allegations of harassment and brazen announcement of committing suicide. (KINS)
