Legal Metrology Department fines srinagar LPG dealer Rs. 1.5 Lakh for distributing underweight cylinders

Srinagar, Aug 31 (KINS): The Enforcement unit of the Legal Metrology Department in Srinagar, responsible for ensuring the accurate quantity of goods and services provided to consumers, has imposed a fine of Rs. 1.5 lakh on an LPG distributor for selling underweight cylinders.
As per the official statement issued to news agency KINS, these cylinders, found to be 400 grams lighter than the declared weight of 14.2 kg, were seized by the department in Srinagar.
“Following the discovery, the matter was brought to the attention of the supplier, who requested that the offense be settled at the departmental level. In accordance with the Legal Metrology Act of 2009, the Enforcement Office in Srinagar imposed the fine after the offender submitted an undertaking to comply with all provisions of the Act going forward”.
“This penalty is part of a broader crackdown by the Legal Metrology Department in Jammu and Kashmir against LPG dealers distributing underweight cylinders. In the current financial year (2024-25), penalties amounting to Rs. 7.14 lakh have been levied on various errant distributors”.
“LPG suppliers and agencies have been instructed to ensure that customers receive the full amount of gas they have paid for. Any failure to comply with these standards will result in strict enforcement under the LegalMetrology Act, 2009, and the LPG Regulation (Supply and Distribution Order) 2000”.
“It is crucial for every LPG agency to verify the weight of the cylinder in the presence of the consumer before delivery, using a weighing scale that has been duly verified by the Legal Metrology Department. Consumers are also encouraged to regularly check the price of LPG, which is subject to monthly changes by Oil Marketing Companies, and to report any instances of overcharging or underweight cylinders to the Legal Metrology Department”.
