Srinagar, Nov 15(KINS): With the recent spurt in road accidents sending shock waves in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police has urged the parents to ensure children don’t ride Scooties and bikes till they cross the age of 18 and pass driving tests.
The development comes a day after two students were killed in a road accident at Tengpora bypass road yesterday. Young students travelling in Thar were killed after hitting the tipper. Their families are in a deep shock and despair since the incident that has sent shock waves across the Valley.
The Valley may have seen the improved security situation in the past few years, but road accidents are increasing rapidly due to the increase in vehicles.
Officials in the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Srinagar told KINS that there has been a considerable increase in the number of private vehicles in the last four to five years. “There is a 15 percent increase in the vehicles Srinagar has at present if the figure is compared to what it was five years ago. Many factors are responsible for the increasing number of vehicles that include easy loan availability by banks, zero deposit scheme by car companies, attractive offers on vehicles especially on new year eves, and last but not the least affordable EMIs, ” An official said.
He however said this all is unstoppable.
Meanwhile, to prevent the rise in accidents in Srinagar, SSP Traffic Muzaffar Ahmed urged the parents to refrain from giving bikes and scooties to children below 18 and also to those who can’t drive properly.
“Our request to parents is to ensure children are not riding scooties and bikes unless they pass the driving test, ” he said(KINS)
