Jammu Dec 11 (KINS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday pledged to restore the historic Darbar Move practice and emphasized preserving Jammu’s distinct identity.
The Darbar Move, a 150-year-old tradition initiated by the Dogra rulers, involved shifting the civil secretariat and other government offices between Srinagar and Jammu every six months to accommodate the seasonal weather changes. The practice was halted in June 2021 by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, citing cost-saving benefits and the complete transition to e-office systems. The move reportedly saved Rs 200 crore annually but drew widespread criticism from political leaders and the Jammu business community, who viewed it as a unifying bond between the two regions.
Addressing reporters according to news agency KINS after meeting with civil society representatives at his official residence, he said, “The Darbar Move will be restored. Jammu holds a unique place in the region, and we will not let its importance diminish.”
He also criticized the lack of attention to the issue during assembly elections, stating, “The Darbar Move did not feature prominently during the election campaign despite being part of our manifesto. It only gained momentum post-election results.”
He highlighted the importance of receiving public feedback on government decisions.
“Often, within the government, it’s hard to get unbiased feedback as you are surrounded by people who only offer praise. Meetings with civil society provide valuable insights that can help shape better policies,” he said.
The chief minister announced plans to hold biannual civil society meetings in both Jammu and Srinagar. “Issues raised during today’s meeting have been noted, and we will share an action-taken report in the next session,” he assured. (KINS)
