Srinagar, Dec 14 (KINS): The Principal of Government Medical College Jammu, Saturday said that a viral infection is suspected to be the cause of the deaths in Rajouri, although investigations are still going on.
At least five people have died in Rajouri in the past few days, sparking concern over a possible outbreak.
The GMC principal told reporters in Jammu as per news gathering agency KINS, “Our preliminary report suggests that a viral infection could be the cause of these deaths, but we are still working to confirm this. We have called in experts from the National Institute of Virology, PGI Chandigarh, and NCDC from Delhi, and they have already arrived in Jammu to investigate further.”
The deaths occurred with some individuals having attended a wedding where food poisoning was initially suspected. “We are also investigating the possibility of food poisoning,” he said.
He said that the health department has taken swift action to contain the situation, screening over 1,800 people in the affected area for any abnormal symptoms. “We are pleased to report that no new cases have emerged, and none of the people we screened showed any signs of illness,” he confirmed.
Principal reassured the public, saying, “From the health and administration perspective, we can assure everyone that the situation is under control. If there was an outbreak, it is now contained, and no new cases have been detected.”
The investigation continues as health officials work to confirm the exact cause of the deaths, but for now, the situation remains stable.(KINS)
