NC, Congress pass resolution against Waqf Amendment, urge Centre to respect J&K mandate

KINS Desk

Srinagar, April 4 (KINS): The National Conference (NC), Congress, and other alliance partners on Friday passed a resolution opposing the recently passed Waqf Amendment Bill and urged the Centre to respect the democratic mandate of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting, held at the official residence of the Deputy Chief Minister, was chaired by NC leader Omar Abdullah. It was attended by legislators from the NC, Congress, and other alliance partners.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, NC legislator Tanvir Sadiq and Congress MLA Nizam-ud-Din Bhat said that the alliance unanimously passed two key resolutions.

“One resolution was passed to oppose the Waqf Amendment Bill that was passed in the Parliament yesterday,” Tanvir said, as per news agency KINS. “We also passed another resolution asking the Central Government to respect the democratic mandate of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. We are working with LG in a cordial atmosphere. But our silence should not be taken as our weakness,” he said.

The leaders asserted that the recent amendments to the Waqf Act undermine the region’s autonomy and the traditional role of the Waqf institutions. They expressed concern over the Centre’s approach towards governance in Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating the demand for restoration of democratic processes.

The development comes amid growing discontent among regional parties over various legislative decisions being taken without the involvement of the elected representatives of Jammu and Kashmir. (KINS)
