VKS Hails Restoration of Historic Vicharnag Temple, Expresses Concern Over Limited Outreach for Pran Pratishtha Ceremony
Srinagar, July 17: Vishwa Kashmiri Samaj (VKS) has welcomed the restoration and redevelopment of the historic Vicharnag Temple in Srinagar while expressing concern over what it termed inadequate outreach regarding the upcoming Pran Pratishtha ceremony.
A VKS delegation, led by its Convenor Kiran Wattal, visited the temple complex on Friday to review arrangements ahead of the Pran Pratishtha scheduled for July 18. The delegation appreciated the restoration work carried out at the shrine, describing it as a significant step towards preserving Kashmir’s ancient religious and cultural heritage.
The members commended the executing agencies for completing the project within a short span and acknowledged the support extended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in facilitating the restoration of the temple complex.
The Samaj said the occasion holds special significance for the Kashmiri Pandit community and noted that the Lieutenant Governor is scheduled to perform Pooja Archana at the temple on July 19, followed by cultural programmes highlighting Kashmir’s Sanatan heritage.
Recalling the Navreh celebrations held at the temple in April 2024, VKS said it had then submitted a proposal seeking comprehensive restoration of the shrine, which was later taken forward by the administration. The organisation also acknowledged the support of the Government of India in advancing the project.
While expressing satisfaction over the preparations, the Samaj voiced concern that many religious leaders, scholars, community representatives and spiritual organisations were still unaware of the detailed programme and schedule of the Pran Pratishtha and related events.
VKS appealed to the Lieutenant Governor to direct the concerned authorities to ensure wider dissemination of information and greater participation of religious leaders, scholars, thinkers and representatives of the Kashmiri Pandit community in the celebrations.
The organisation said broader community involvement would enhance the significance of the event and strengthen collective efforts towards preserving Kashmir’s spiritual and cultural legacy.
Expressing optimism about the upcoming ceremonies on July 18 and 19, VKS said the events would mark an important milestone in the revival of the historic Vicharnag Temple and the promotion of Kashmir’s rich Sanatan traditions.
