Srinagar, August 14 (KINS), 2026: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday attended the solemn observance of ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ at Tagore Hall, Srinagar, and paid heartfelt tribute to the victims of the Partition of 1947.
The event was marked by collective remembrance and a reaffirmation of national unity. Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor said the sacrifices and suffering endured by millions during Partition continue to remain a painful chapter in India’s collective consciousness.
“Decades after the Partition, their sacrifice reminds us that the wound remains unhealed, lingering as a generational pain in India’s collective soul. On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, we are not merely recalling the past but we are giving voice to those millions whose voices were taken away from them,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
He said remembering the victims with truthfulness, honesty and sensitivity was a duty towards humanity and stressed that their stories would remain an indelible part of the nation’s collective memory.
The Lieutenant Governor urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to observe the day as an occasion for introspection and reaffirm their commitment to peace, harmony and national unity. He also praised the resilience of those who rebuilt their lives after Partition and contributed to the country’s social, cultural and economic development.
“Today’s occasion is an opportunity to acknowledge the pain of the past and strengthen our unwavering commitment to peace, harmony and national unity. This day reminds us that only the lessons of history can make the future secure and humane,” he said.
Sinha said Partition divided families and displaced communities, including those from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Chhamb. He also paid tribute to those who, according to him, faced discrimination in Jammu and Kashmir for decades under Article 370, and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government with granting them equal rights.
He also remembered the families who suffered during the tribal invasion of Jammu and Kashmir months after Partition.
“Within a few months of Partition, enemies of the nation carried out a terror attack under the cover of tribal invasions. The Indian Army and people fought bravely. The struggle and sacrifice of countless families are an integral part of the collective memory of Jammu Kashmir. Today, I humbly pay tribute to the patience, hard work, and unbroken patriotism of all those families,” he said.
Addressing the youth, the Lieutenant Governor called upon them to learn from the painful experiences of the past, reject hatred and communal bitterness, and work towards strengthening trust and unity.
“The youth of Jammu Kashmir must ensure that the mistakes of the past are never repeated in the future. Where walls were once raised, you must build bridges of trust and construct a Viksit Bharat that is inclusive,” Sinha said.
He said India’s strength lies in its diversity, with different languages, cultures, traditions and beliefs forming the country’s unique social fabric.
He urged people to ensure that future generations remain aware of the pain of Partition while working to strengthen peace, harmony and national unity.
“Through Partition, enemies of the nation tried to destroy this spirit of unity in diversity, but India has continuously moved forward with pride and confidence. We must take a pledge to acquaint future generations with the pain of Partition, to strengthen peace and harmony, and to ensure that such a tragedy is never repeated. Building a self-reliant Jammu Kashmir is a shared duty and national unity remains the bedrock of our strength, security and collective progress,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
The Lieutenant Governor also visited a photo exhibition organised on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. A two-minute silence was observed in memory of those who lost their lives during the Partition.
A theatrical performance was also presented during the event, depicting the trauma, hardship and displacement suffered by millions during Partition.
Chairperson of the J&K Waqf Board Dr Syed Darakhshan Andrabi, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary Jal Shakti Department Shaleen Kabra, Principal Secretary Culture Brij Mohan Sharma, BJP J&K General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul, senior officials, prominent citizens and a large number of youth were present on the occasion.(KINS)
