Srinagar, Oct 18 (KINS): Jammu and Kashmir needs to create around two lakh jobs every year to address unemployment, Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, Administrative Secretary, Labour and Employment Department, said during a press conference.
Ranjan said government jobs and traditional industries alone would not be sufficient to meet the growing demand for employment, stressing the need to develop new sectors such as Global Capability Centres (GCCs).
He said around 2–2.5 lakh people enter the workforce annually in J&K, making large-scale job creation essential to address the challenge. According to him, government recruitment can provide employment to only a limited number of people, while traditional industries and other existing avenues may also fall short of meeting the overall demand.
Explaining the potential of GCCs, Ranjan said such centres could create substantial employment opportunities by establishing large corporate offices in the region. He highlighted J&K’s skilled human resources, favourable climate and improved connectivity with Delhi as key advantages for attracting these centres.
Ranjan said developing skilled manpower and attracting GCCs could help J&K generate employment opportunities locally, particularly in white-collar and technology-oriented sectors.
He also highlighted the potential impact on education and skill development, saying the establishment of GCCs could encourage young people to acquire relevant skills and qualifications, creating an ecosystem that supports both employment and further investment.
Ranjan emphasised the need to promote the GCC model on a wider scale, describing it as a potential avenue for addressing the region’s long-standing unemployment challenge.(KINS)
