CM Omar Abdullah vows to safeguard media freedom in J&K

Srinagar, Oct 19 (KINS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in his first public address at Jammu after assuming office, emphasized his government’s commitment to protecting media freedom in Jammu & Kashmir.
Omar Abdullah stated that no punitive action would be taken against those who criticize his administration.
“I would like to assure my media colleagues that my government will not impose any strictness or injustice against you,” said Omar, addressing party workers and leaders in Jammu.
“You will not be punished for writing anything against me. Although I may not like reading or watching it, in a democracy, we cannot strengthen our institutions if we do not allow the media to do its work.”
The Chief Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by journalists in the region, specifically referencing issues related to press accreditation. “There are many press colleagues whose accreditation or registration has been endangered. Their registration and press cards have not been issued. This will be corrected gradually, and we will work to strengthen your institution,” he promised.
Abdullah called for a balanced approach from the media, urging journalists to hold his government accountable while also acknowledging its successes. “Where our work is not good, you must pull our ears. But where there is good work, even if you write a few words of praise, it will be appreciated,” he added.(KINS)
