Srinagar, Nov 06 (KINS): Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Surinder Singh Choudhary of the National Conference, introduced a resolution in the state assembly today calling for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
The resolution urges the Government of India to initiate dialogue with elected representatives of Jammu and Kashmir to reinstate the constitutional guarantees that safeguard the region’s unique identity, culture, and rights.
The resulation, seconded by Minister Skina Masood Itoo, emphasized the critical need to restore these protections in a way that upholds national unity while respecting the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Deputy CM Choudhary’s resolution stated, “This legislative assembly reaffirms the importance of the special status and constitutional guarantees which safeguard the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and expresses concern over the unilateral removal.”
However, the resolution faced immediate pushback from BJP’s Sunil Sharma, who argued that the proposal was not part of the assembly’s scheduled business and thus should not be addressed.
His opposition sparked intense reactions from other parties, with opposition leaders pouring into the well of the assembly, chanting slogans and staging a protest against the resolution.
Despite Speaker’s attempts to bring order and proceed with discussions, opposition leaders continued their demonstration, creating a highly charged atmosphere in the chamber.
The speaker then passed the resolution amidst the protest.(KINS)
