CM Omar announces revival of Darbar Move in J&K

KINS Desk

Jammu, Oct 16 (KINS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced the revival of the traditional bi-annual Darbar Move after a gap of more than four years.

The practice, which involves shifting the capital between Jammu and Srinagar with the change of season, was halted by the Lieutenant Governor’s administration in 2021.

Addressing a press conference in Jammu, Omar said the state cabinet had given its nod to resume the century-old tradition and the file was approved by the Lieutenant Governor. “The government is reviving the practice soon,” he said, according to news agency KINS.

The Darbar Move was introduced in 1872 by Maharaja Gulab Singh to ensure administrative accessibility across both regions. It continued uninterrupted for over a century, symbolizing the unity of Jammu and Kashmir, until its suspension in 2021. The government’s decision marks the return of one of J&K’s oldest administrative traditions. (KINS)
