Black bear captured near Nigeen Lake after 11-day Srinagar hunt

KINS Desk

Srinagar, Dec 06 (KINS): After remaining elusive for nearly 11 days and triggering widespread concern, the wandering black bear that entered Srinagar’s urban areas was finally trapped on Saturday evening near Nigeen Lake.

The animal walked into a specially installed cage following sustained monitoring by wildlife teams.

Officials told news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) that the bear will be shifted to a safe forest area after undergoing a medical check-up. The unusual movement of the wild animal through several busy localities had led to a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple agencies.

The bear was earlier sighted at NIT Srinagar, Kashmir University and SKIMS Soura.

Meanwhile, authorities said heightened surveillance will continue as another bear reportedly spotted near the University of Kashmir is yet to be captured. (KINS)
