Srinagar, July 20 (KINS): The Meteorological Centre Srinagar on Monday said several parts of Jammu and Kashmir received significant rainfall during the past 24 hours and warned that the ongoing wet spell is likely to continue till July 23, with the possibility of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several districts.
According to the MeT Department, Rajouri recorded the highest rainfall at 92.5 mm, followed by Poonch (78 mm), Chahta Jammu (59 mm), Katra (53.5 mm), Ganderbal (46 mm), Srinagar (45.6 mm) and Ramban (45.2 mm) during the last 24 hours.
The weather office has forecast generally cloudy conditions with frequent spells of rain and thunderstorms across most parts of Jammu and Kashmir from July 20 to July 23. It said heavy rain, brief intense showers and torrential rainfall are expected at several places, while a few districts may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The MeT Department has warned that Reasi and Udhampur districts in the Jammu division are likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall, particularly during afternoon, evening and late night to early morning hours.
From July 24 to July 27, weather conditions are expected to improve slightly, although scattered rain and thundershowers with brief intense showers are still likely at a few places.
Issuing an advisory, the MeT Department cautioned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, Ramban and Kishtwar districts between July 20 and July 23.
The department also warned of a high risk of flash floods, landslides and mudslides at vulnerable locations due to continuous rainfall. It further said there is a possibility of a rise in water levels in rivers, streams and nallahs, which could lead to flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
The MeT Department has advised residents, travellers and pilgrims to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas during periods of intense rainfall, and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety.(KINS)
