Army chief cancels visit to Pathankot amid India-China tensions

Srinagar: Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane’s planned visit to Pathankot military station has been cancelled, reported a news agency, Asian News International, quoting unnamed army sources.

This comes after an Indian officer and two soldiers were killed in a “violent face-off” with the troops of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) last night.

As per the Indian army statement, “During the de-escalation process underway in the Galwan Valley, a violent face-off took place yesterday night with casualties. The loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers. Senior military officials of the two sides are currently meeting at the venue to defuse the situation.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian, said “India troops crossed the border line twice on Monday provoking and attacking Chinese personnel resulting in serious physical confrontation between border forces on the two sides,” reported an international news agency, AFP.
