Seminar on ‘Drug Abuse’ Organized at Sopore

 

Baramulla, April 30: As part of Drug De-Addiction week, being celebrated from April 29 to May 05 by district administration Baramulla as an effort to combat the menace of drug addiction and to strengthen efforts towards its total eradication, a day long seminar on drug abuse was today organized at SRM Welkin School, Sopore in which a huge gathering of students, civil society members, representatives of various trade associations and other prominent sections of the society participated.

On the occasion, various speakers spoke on the topic wherein they highlighted the negative impacts of drugs on social, physical and mental well being on the addicts. They underlined the need to put stringent initiatives in place so that the menace is eradicated from the society.

Meanwhile, a painting competition on the topic was organized in which various students participated. The participants displayed various ills and appeals regarding drug abuse through their paintings. Best performing participants were given awards for their felicitation.

Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Dr G N Itoo, who was the chief guest at the event complimented the participants for their participation in the programme and said that drug abuse poses a serious challenge to our society. He said that the need of the hour is to enforce relevant legislations and laws so that the menace is effectively controlled. He also urged upon different sections of the society to act vibrantly against it besides assuring every possible initiative from the district administration in this regard.

Meanwhile, Dr Itoo exhorted upon the teachers to properly guide and counsel the students besides highlighting their role in social and mental development of a student. He also stressed upon the parents to closely monitor their children whether they are indulged into fallacious activities inflicted upon them through different mediums including mobile phones, internet etc.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore Ashiq Lily, SSP Sopore, district and sectoral officers and various other concerned were present on the occasion.
