Sunil Sharma slams Omar Abdullah over free electricity statement

Srinagar, Nov 08 (KINS): Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Saturday hit out at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his remarks that only households with installed power meters will be eligible for 200 units of free electricity.

Addressing an election rally in Budgam on Friday, Omar Abdullah had urged people to allow installation of meters, saying, “Those who don’t have meters won’t get 200 units of electricity free.”

Reacting sharply, Sharma accused the Chief Minister of misleading the public. “Before the 2024 elections, Omar Abdullah promised that people would get 200 units of electricity free. After coming to power, he asked people to install meters, and now he says only metered connections will get the benefit. This is nothing but deception,” Sharma said while addressing a rally in Budgam, according to news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).

He further alleged that the government has failed to provide relief to the common people. “Poor families who earlier received electricity bills of Rs 800 are now getting bills of Rs 1500. Instead of admitting their failures, they are committing frauds and blaming others,” he said.

Sharma also accused the ruling party of resorting to divisive politics. “They are spreading false propaganda that if people vote for BJP, Islam will be in danger. This is how they mislead people to hide their governance failures,” he added.

The remarks come amid intensified campaigning ahead of the Budgam bypolls scheduled for November 11. (KINS)
