J&K Police crack down on unauthorized VPN use in Budgam; 24 identified, two FIRs registered

Budgam, Jan 03 (KINS): Continuing its efforts to enforce lawful orders and prevent misuse of digital platforms, Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken action against the unauthorized use of Virtual Private Network (VPN) services in Budgam district.

Following prohibitory orders issued by the District Administration on December 29, 2025, banning the use of unauthorized VPN services, police carried out systematic verification and monitoring across the district. During the period from December 29, 2025 to January 2, 2026, as many as 24 individuals were identified for violating the orders.

Based on technical analysis and investigation, two FIRs were registered against individuals having adverse terror-related backgrounds, highlighting the serious security risks associated with misuse of encrypted platforms. Additionally, security proceedings were initiated against 11 individuals, aged between 18 and 40 years, for non-compliance with the prohibitory orders.

The individuals were bound down under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and later released after due warning.

J&K Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining public order, enforcing lawful directives, and preventing the misuse of digital platforms. Citizens have been advised to strictly comply with orders issued by the District Administration and to use digital services responsibly.(KINS)
