Govt considering to extend summer vacation in Kashmir: Sakina Itoo

KINS Desk
Srinagar, July 18 (KINS): Amid the prevailing heatwave across Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir government is considering extending the ongoing summer vacation for schools in the Valley, Education Minister Sakina Itoo said on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, Itoo said the government is closely monitoring the weather situation and will take a final decision after assessing the prevailing conditions.
“Schools are closed till Sunday. We are keeping a close watch on the weather and will take an appropriate decision regarding the extension of summer vacation, keeping in mind the safety and well-being of our children,” she said.
The minister said that Kashmir has witnessed unusually high temperatures over the past two days, describing the heat as unprecedented compared to previous years.
“Education is important, but the lives and safety of students remain our top priority,” Itoo said, adding that no decision would be taken that could expose children to extreme weather conditions.
She said the government would announce its decision soon after reviewing the latest weather situation.
Schools across the Kashmir division are currently observing summer vacation from July 6 to July 19, 2026. The government is now expected to decide whether the break should be extended in view of the continuing heatwave.
