Beed, Aug 20: A 19-year-old woman is battling for her life after surgical gloves and paper napkins were allegedly left inside her abdomen following a caesarean section at Beed District Hospital, with the incident triggering an inquiry into suspected medical negligence.
Sandhya Suraj Gaikwad underwent a C-section at the district hospital on August 1 and was discharged four days later. However, she developed severe abdominal pain and nausea after returning home.
Her family subsequently consulted a private doctor, where an ultrasound reportedly detected a foreign object inside her abdomen. The family then took her to Sassoon Hospital in Pune, where doctors allegedly removed surgical gloves and paper napkins during a subsequent operation.
According to the family, Sandhya underwent several surgeries between August 1 and 13 and is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital in Pune. Her condition is stated to be critical.
Sandhya’s mother, Sheela Ujgave, alleged that the family lost confidence in the district hospital and decided against taking her daughter back there for corrective surgery.
“My daughter has undergone several surgeries from August 1 to August 13. This sort of negligence is not expected in a district hospital,” she said.
Her husband, Suraj Gaikwad, said the woman was unable to even hold her newborn child due to her critical condition.
Beed District Civil Surgeon Dr Sheshrao Jagtap confirmed that a foreign body had been left inside the woman’s abdomen and termed the incident “gross negligence.”
He said show-cause notices had been issued to the female doctor who performed the C-section and other concerned staff. A detailed report has also been prepared for submission to the authorities.
The Health Department has said strict action will be taken against those found responsible following the inquiry.
