Srinagar-Jammu highway re-opens

The strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway reopened for traffic movement Thursday evening after remaining closed for more than 24 hours with 2000 stranded vehicles being cleared, officials said.

Traffic officials said traffic on the highway resumed Thursday evening and stranded vehicles are being cleared following fresh landslides at several places on Wednesday.

Senior Superintendent of Traffic, Rural Kashmir, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah said one way traffic on the highway has been restored and the landslide areas including Moumpassi, Digdole and Panthiyal have been cleared.

“No fresh traffic will be allowed from both the sides on Friday. Primarily, the stranded vehicles will be cleared,” he said.

As per the traffic officials, the passage of stranded vehicles from Udampur to Srinagar would be allowed on Friday but no fresh traffic would be allowed on the highway.

Meanwhile, traffic on Zojila-Leh road remained suspended for the 9th consecutive day following fresh snowfall on Wednesday.

However, traffic on the Mughal Road connecting the Pir Panjal region remained suspended for the fourth consecutive week following the season’s snowfall on November 7.

Director Meteorological Department, Sonam Lotus said weather was likely to remain dry and cloudy across Kashmir region up to December 10.

There is no forecast of heavy rains or snowfall in next 24 hours in the Valley, he said.

“We are expecting light rains in the upper reaches of the Valley in the next 24 hours but that will not have any impact in the plains,” Lotus said.

As per the Met officials, Srinagar marked the day temperature at 5.4 degrees Celsius against night temperature of -0.5 degrees Celsius.

Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 20.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 12.9 degrees Celsius.
