UTs of J-K and Ladakh to be part of northern regional committee of NCTE

Srinagar: The newly carved out Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh would be part of Northern Regional Committee of the National Council for Teacher Education, official documents reveal.

As per the NCTE (Regional Committees Territorial Jurisdiction) Regulations-2020, J-K and Ladakh UTs will come under jurisdiction of the body’s Northern Regional Committee headquartered at Jaipur, Rajasthan.
The group also includes Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh UT. The notification was issued nearly three months after erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir was partitioned into two Union Territories. J-K and Ladakh UTs started functioning as separate territorial entities from 31 October 2019 after Parliament approved J-K Re-organisation Act on 5 August.

The NCTE is a statutory body set-up in 1995 to oversee standards, procedures and processes in the Indian education system.

It coordinates and monitors the teacher education system and prepares plans and programmes for it. The NCTE has its headquarters in Delhi apart from regional representation in many other cities. Four official regional committees of NCTE operate from Jaipur, Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar and Bhopal respectively handling the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western regions respectively.
