Altaf Thakur urges J&K Govt to appoint Nodal officers to check authenticity of NGOs, relief distribution

Srinagar, April 14: Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) J&K spokesman Altaf Thakur on Tuesday urged the Union Territory government to appoint a Nodal officer for checking the authenticity of hundreds of NGOs, who are on ground claiming that they are providing a helping hand to the poor. Thakur said there are reports that dozens of fake NGOs are filling their own coffers by taking selfies with the poor while distributing small kits that include few biscuit packets etc.
In a statement issued here, Thakur said that whenever tragedy has stuck Kashmir, NGOs have played a vital role be that of 2014 deluge and other challenging times and even today many NGOs are doing good work but at the same time, some people in the name of fake NGOs are exploiting the poor and are making fun of extending help to the needy at a time when Covid-19 pandemic is spreading across J&K with a great speed.
Thakurs said he feels hurt while seeing heads of NGOs providing a few small packets to the poor in Kashmir and clicking selfies with the needy people, which they later sell to make huge money in the name of providing relief to the needy. The BJP leader suggested that government must set guidelines for all the NGOs for distributing relief among the poor and best way for NGOs is to fix their label on the kits and other items and hand over the same to the concerned deputy commissioners for hassle free distribution.
He said that ever NGO has dozens of members who travel from one place to another which poses a great risk of spreading the pandemic. “For stopping this, NGOs who are genuine in nature, should deposit their relief kits by fixing their tags on the packets, at the concerned DC offices for timely distribution. This he said, can be done only when the government appoints a Nodal officer under whose supervision relief distribution would take place.
