LMD recovers fine of Rs. 55 Lacs from erring traders

SRINAGAR SEPT 23 ( KINS): The Department of Legal Metrology has realised a fine of Rs. 55 Lacs from traders found violating the provisions of Legal Metrology Act- 2009 during the current financial year starting from April, 2021.

The fines were recovered during the intensified market checking inspections held across the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir under the supervision of Controller, Legal Metrology, J&K, Majid K.A Drabu.

The offenders include the Petrol Pump owners, Departmental Stores, Gas Agencies, Kiryana sellers, Gold Smiths, Cement sellers, Plywood sellers etc. who were booked for using defective weighing instruments and lack of proper declarations on pre-packaged items.

During the market checking inspections, the traders were directed to use only verified weighing and measuring instruments for commercial transactions and to desist from sale of such Non-standard pre-packaged commodities which are against the Legal Metrology norms.

Meanwhile, the department has informed that it is mandatory for every seller/trader to ensure proper declarations like the MRP, Net Weight, Customer Care address, Date of Packing, Size etc, on the commodity meant for sale and the action under Legal Metrology Act, 2009 can be taken against any such trader found violating such norms.
