Kashmir Oct 08: The Congress-National Conference Sunday won the Kargil Autonomous Hill Development Council (KAHDC) elections by a thumping majority with the alliance winning 22 seats.
A total of 85 candidates were contesting on 26 seats while four members are nominated by the Union Territory administration for which polls were held on October 4 and the results were announced on October 08.
The elections assumed significance as the polls were held for the first time in Ladakh Union Territory after abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh into two Union Territories.
The NC candidates won 12 seats followed by Congress 10-, BJP-2 and Independents-2.
Currently, Ladakh is a Union Territory with two districts Leh and Kargil without its own legislative assembly. The results are seen a major setback for the BJP
People of Kargil had protests for months against the BJP-led government’s decision. They say they were better off with J&K rather than a separate Union Territory.
