Srinagar, May 28: The Kashmir Power Development Corporation (KPDCL) stated that power theft continues to be a significant issue in Kashmir, showing no signs of abating.
To combat this persistent problem, the department will continue nighttime raids and enforce stringent legal actions against offenders.
In every district, KPDCL has deployed dedicated night squads to monitor and apprehend power thieves.
‘Recently, several violators engaging in unauthorized power use were successfully caught. Evidence of these infractions was meticulously recorded, and strict legal action was taken. This crackdown is part of a broader strategy to curb power theft, which not only causes financial losses but also affects the stability and reliability of the power supply”, said one of the officials in KPDCL.
“Further reports have identified specific instances of daytime power theft in various areas. Consumers have been caught stealing electricity from bare conductors, an act described as criminal. Offenders are being reported to law enforcement agencies for appropriate action”.
KPDCL is also taking steps to reassess the actual power usage of its consumers and revise their agreements accordingly to ensure that consumption is accurately recorded and billed.
This measure aims to prevent further instances of power theft and ensure that all users comply with regulations.
The official said that to reinforce its stance, KPDCL is actively registering First Information Reports (FIRs) with the police against those caught stealing electricity. “KPDCL has documented numerous cases of power theft during their nighttime inspections, leading to legal consequences as stipulated under the Indian Electricity Act, 2003”.
The public is strongly advised to refrain from engaging in unauthorized power use to avoid severe repercussions, including police action and legal penalties. KPDCL emphasizes the importance of legal electricity use to maintain a fair and stable power distribution system for all consumers.
The corporation urges the community to cooperate by reporting any suspicious activities related to power theft and to adhere to the legal usage of electricity.
