Kathmandu, Nepal July 24: In a devastating incident at Tribhuvan International Airport, an aircraft carrying 19 people skidded off the runway and crashed.
According to media reports, at least 18 individuals lost their lives in the crash.
The crash, involving a Pokhara-bound Saurya Airlines plane, occurred around 11 am during takeoff.
The ill-fated flight, operated by a private airline company, carried two crew members and 17 technicians. According to Airport Security Chief Arjun Chand Thakuri, the aircraft caught fire after it skidded off the runway and crashed into a field east of the runway.
“The pilot of the aircraft has been taken to a hospital,” reported a security official deployed at the airport, while withholding further details. Another official confirmed that the fire emanating from the aircraft had been extinguished.
Saurya Airlines, which operates domestic flights in Nepal, owns two Bombardier CRJ-200 regional jets, both approximately 20 years old, according to Flight Radar 24 data. This tragic event marks the latest in a series of plane crashes in Nepal, highlighting ongoing concerns about aviation safety in the region.
