Srinagar, Aug 27 (KINS): The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer Jammu and Kashmir has announced several measures to ensure an inclusive voting process for the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections.
These initiatives aim to enhance accessibility for differently-abled voters and address the needs of elderly and migrant voters.
“Polling stations will be equipped with ramps and wheelchairs to assist those with mobility challenges. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with Braille will be available for visually impaired voters, allowing them to vote independently. Additionally, dedicated volunteers and sign language interpreters will be present to support voters with hearing impairments,” the CEO informed as per news agency KINS.
“A separate queue for persons with disabilities (PWD) will be established to expedite their voting and reduce wait times. For elderly voters unable to visit polling stations, home voting facilities will be implemented. Special polling stations have also been set up for Kashmiri migrants to facilitate their participation,” .
Meanwhile Hajra, an 87-year-old voter, expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am deeply grateful to the Election Commission for providing home voting facilities for elderly voters like me. It’s a great relief and makes voting so much easier.”
The Election Commission is also ramping up efforts through the SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) programme to raise awareness and encourage participation among young, elderly, female, and differently-abled voters.
Kashmiri migrants have also praised the establishment of special polling stations, noting that these provisions make it more convenient for them to exercise their voting rights.(KINS)
