Dr. Satwant Singh Rissam lauds BJP MP’s reprimand over Sajjan Kumar visit; urges sensitivity for victims

Jammu Aug 30: Dr. Satwant Singh Rissam, columnist, author and Chairman of the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Memorial Trust, welcomed BJP National President Nitin Nabin’s decision to reprimand three party MPs and seek an explanation for their condolence visit to the residence of convicted Sajjan Kumar.

In a statement, Dr. Rissam said the step demonstrates sensitivity to wounds that remain fresh among the Sikh community and reflects widespread public hurt over the 1984 anti‑Sikh violence. He recalled that the constitution of a Special Investigation Team under Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi led to Sajjan Kumar’s conviction and life sentence, describing the verdict as a long‑overdue measure of justice for victims and survivors.

“The pain of 1984 continues to live in the hearts of countless Sikh families,” Dr. Rissam said, urging public representatives to exercise the utmost sensitivity when their actions touch on the legacy of communal violence. He warned that behaviour appearing to honour a convicted perpetrator reopens those wounds, undermines public trust and disrespects the memory of the victims.

Dr. Rissam called on all political parties and their workers to show restraint, empathy and adherence to the rule of law. He urged continued government commitment to protect communal harmony, ensure accountability and prevent the recurrence of such tragedies. Dr. Satwant appealed to public figures to model conduct that upholds justice and moral responsibility as essential to national reconciliation.
