Newborn dies at district hospital Bandipora, family alleges negligence

Bandipora, Aug 29 (KINS): A newborn baby died at District Hospital Bandipora, following which family members alleged lapses in the handling of the case and demanded an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.
According to the family, the woman had undergone an ultrasound examination a few days before the delivery and was informed by the doctor that the pregnancy and delivery were normal.
The relatives alleged that four women on duty at the hospital were involved in assisting the woman during the delivery. They claimed that the staff initially informed them that the baby was fine, but shortly afterwards, they were told that the newborn had died.
Questioning the sequence of events, the family members asked why they were not informed immediately if the newborn had already died. They alleged that the delay in informing them raised concerns about the handling of the case and demanded that the entire sequence of events be examined.
The family has sought an inquiry into the treatment provided to the mother and newborn, the medical decisions taken during the delivery and the circumstances leading to the death. They said accountability should be fixed if any negligence, delay or procedural lapse is established.
The family also questioned whether timely medical intervention or referral to a higher medical centre was considered during the case.
The Medical Superintendent (MS) of District Hospital Bandipora said an inquiry team would be constituted and that a report would be submitted within three days. He said the case would be examined and appropriate action would be taken based on the findings.
The incident has also led locals to raise concerns over emergency healthcare services, referral mechanisms and staffing at the district hospital. Residents said timely assessment and referral are important in cases involving pregnant women, newborns and other critically ill patients. (KINS)
