Srinagar Jan 22 (KINS): The prolonged dry spell in Kashmir last year significantly affected the region’s water resources, said Brahman Jyoti, Chief Engineer, Jal Shakti Kashmir.
Speaking about the challenges and measures undertaken, Jyoti highlighted the impact of reduced snowfall and rainfall on river channels and groundwater levels, which caused difficulties in maintaining water supply during the summer.
“Due to less precipitation last year, the water level in river channels and the groundwater table decreased, affecting drinking water supply during summers. However, we expect no such issues this year, as the melting snow in winter will naturally replenish water levels,” he told news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS).
On the status of the Thargar Null project, Jyoti provided insights into the progress and challenges. The project, initially scheduled for completion by 2024, has faced delays due to limited availability of electric mechanical components and increased workloads on manufacturers. “The Jal Jeevan Mission is being executed in mission mode across the country, which has added pressure on factories producing key components. However, the situation is improving, and we aim to complete the work by 31st March 2025,” he stated.
Currently, 88% of the Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) under the Jal Jeevan Mission have been achieved, he said. Jyoti expressed confidence in meeting the mission’s goals and assured that water supply norms would be met for all areas, including far-flung regions.
To address water scarcity in rural areas, Jyoti stated the establishment of control rooms at the heart division level and provincial level in Srinagar. These control rooms are equipped to handle complaints and ensure prompt action. “The contact numbers of our control rooms are widely publicized through print media. People in rural areas can reach out for assistance through these helplines,” he added. (KINS)
